Magazine Adverts
(they are hard to find.....!)

I recently discovered a fantastic document compression system called Djvu.  It is ideal for presenting brochures etc on the web since its compression algorithms are so efficient. I have used this to provide the enlarged copies of the adverts below. So, in order for you to view them you need to download the plug-in first. 

Could this be the earliest mag advert for the W123 ? It comes from a 1976 edition of the American Magazine "CAR and DRIVER".  Its a two page ad so to see the right hand side click here. The full title of the piece is:

"Mercedes-Benz  presents a singular new achievement"

Take a look at it and drool at the thought of actually owning a brand new one of these babies ! 

 

This second ad is from 1979 (I dont know what mag it came from).  Its for the 240D and extols the economical virtues of the diesel engine.

As a Brit I am frustrated that I have not been able to find any British magazine adverts for the W123.  If anyone out there has one then please send me a copy !

 
I like this advert.  It shows the complete range of cars (who all happen to be diesels in this ad) whizzing along in front of a strange stripey red and green barrier.  

The ad comes from the December 1979 edition of Gourmet magazine....tasty!!!
This advert is from a 1981 edition "CAR and DRIVER" magazine.  It refers to the 240D as "that one and a half ton mobile efficiency system". 

Not a very sexy description !

This advert is actually for the complete range of Turbodiesels that MB were offering back in 1981.  It is a "two pager" and the other page features the 300D, 300CD, 300TD and even the 300SD.

It is entitled "Mercedes_Benz unleashes two more high-performance Turbo-diesels" (presumably the explanation for two pictures of the same car...?) and also includes a picture of a man in a white coat holding his 17-pound turbocharger..

 
This  next ad is from May 1983 and is for the 300D.  It is also a two pager and  It comes from "Gourmet" magazine again (obviously good food and MB cars go together...).  The other page contains a really nice spiel about the 300D.  It mentions the price of the car and even quotes how much a gallon of diesel  cost back then.  To read the words  click here. This is a good one !!!  Maybe in an attempt to dispel the rumours that their diesels were slow MB decided to compare them with the C-111/3.
