280 Saloon Brochure

Yes, the top of the range car got a brochure all to itself.  In truth it was pretty similar to the earlier brochure produced for the more lowly saloon models.

It does contain a beautiful two page pull out side view of a beautiful red 280. Unfortunately it was too big to scan in.  Just take my word for it or better still ask me if I've got any spare brochures for sale.

However there are a couple of gems that I have put on show.  The picture of the guys working on the model is nice. What I'd give to have that one in my collection.

The picture of the petrol garage is quite good.  In fact I'd like to start a caption competition for this one.  My submission would have something in it alluding to the guy filling the petrol not being totally honest about the amount of hair he actually has on his head !  Lets hear what you think....

The front/side/back image is similar to the one in the other saloon brochure but I thought some of you might prefer red to yellow (or of course vice versa).  One very interesting point to note is that this is the only shot in the whole brochure where the 280 is shown with alloy wheels.  Were they an extra, or more sinisterly, were the other cars shown not really 280's ? (Actually I've just noticed that the model has got alloys...)

The insert page is once again rather uninspiring, a blurred shot of a red 280 framed by a dirty old railway bridge..  However there's one interesting thing about it that not a lot of people would know...

..back in 1976 Mercedes placed an insert into the Financial Times newspaper in the UK.  It was a big A3 sized, 4 page pull out entitled "From today, all other cars will seem a little less new".  Now I'm not quite sure how well this statement stills hold up as we prepare to enter the new Millennium but I guess a quarter of a century ago it was a fair claim since it was heralding the arrival of the W123.  Anyway on the back page of this publication is a nice picture of a red W123, wending its way through some  hilly English countryside.  You will may notice a familiarity with the car appearing from under the bridge....

By the way...back in 1976 the 280E cost £7,990 (including alloys? answers on an email to david@w123.net )
